SCIMAGE’S ENTERPRISE SOLUTION ALLOWS FIVE CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENTS TO SHARE PATIENT IMAGES AND INFORMATION SAFELY, SECURELY AND EFFICIENTLY

Los Altos, CA November 13, 2002 — ScImage announced today that BJC HealthCare, as part of an expansive 10-year integration and renovation project, has recently purchased and installed ScImage’s Third Generation, Web-enabled PICOMEnterprise information and image management distribution solution. ScImage’s PICOMEnterprise and other ScImage technologies serve 16 Cath labs at five facilities within BJC, including Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Barnes Jewish Hospital, Boone Hospital Center and two physician-owned outpatient cath labs. These five facilities perform approximately 20,000 procedures annually.

PICOMEnterprise enables BJC HealthCare providers to capture and store information, images, patient demographics, reports, waveforms or any other information regarding the patient’s clinical data. Procedural studies are collected and stored in a patient-centric, electronic medical record called the Electronic Patient Folder that can be viewed securely from PICOMEnterprise, anywhere the care giver requires access, using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher.

The installation has created a large integrated network that is used by more than 250 cardiologists, surgeons, residents and attending physicians. Physicians using the PICOMEnterprise system are able to exchange imaging data with participating facilities in the BJC network using secure, hierarchical log-ins. Frank Reed, who is the Barnes Jewish Hospital Cardiac Cath Lab Technology Manager says, “BJC HealthCare is a complex network that is composed of multiple hospitals and hundreds of physicians. We needed a solution that could provide timely access to patients’ images and information from multiple labs and multiple hospitals using one common solution. ScImage is helping us accomplish that task.”

Dr. Megumi Taniuchi, Associate Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, appreciates the flexibility that PICOMEnterprise provides and praises its efficiency. He states, “A Study from a patient receiving a diagnostic Cardiac Cath Procedure at The Heart Care Institute 15 miles away can immediately be reviewed in the cath lab at Barnes-Jewish Hospital for immediate physician consultation. The increase in efficiency with PICOMEnterprise allows more timely clinical decisions and development of effective treatment plans. The result is enhanced patient care and communication among physicians.”

Security concerns, as they relate to HIPAA (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996), are laid to rest due to the hierarchical access protocols that are standard within PICOMEnterprise. Administrators are given the option of creating several types of users within BJC from administrator, to super-user, to referring physician, to patient. The architecture of PICOMEnterprise provides a central administration point that simplifies the process of maintaining and updating the system. Scott Couts, Program Manager for Clinical Engineering, agrees, “The architecture of PICOMEnterprise gives us the flexibility to administer and maintain the technology from anywhere within the BJC Health System network, without interrupting the clinicians’ case load.”
